Angler lands ‘bucket list’ catch in Margate

A 21kg giant trevally was caught off Margate Pier using live blacktail as bait.

With the holidays now over, local anglers are returning to their favourite fishing spots. This is paying off with salmon/kob on the bite.

Local fishing guru, Stompie Koekemoer from KZN Fishing Guides said Margate pier is the talk of the town with plenty of salmon on the bite.

Willie van der Westhuizen caught a kob recently.

Michael Govender caught a 21kg giant trevally (GT) using live blacktail as bait at Margate Pier last Monday. The epic ‘bucket list’ catch put up a fight for over an hour.

A few shad and salmon were on the bite at Uvongo pier during the week. There were reports of sharks being caught at Orange Rocks in Uvongo, which were safely returned to the water.

Louie du Plessis caught and safely released a shark at Orange Rock in Uvongo.

Also, good size shad were caught at The Block in Port Shepstone.

Anglers can look forward to a good few days although today (Thursday) might be a little windy, but it should be good weather on the weekend. A tip for the week ahead, use live bait for sharks and edibles such as salmon and couta.

On the deep sea fishing side, some tuna and a few dorado were caught, but locals are optimistic that it will only get better with it being summer.
