Southbroom golfer reels in East Griqualand Open title
The Big Fish seems to be back to his best form again.
Gavin Sole has reclaimed the East Griqualand Open title and he needed some of his best golf to get it done.
The Big Fish, who hails from Southbroom Golf Club, has now won it for a record eighth time.
He was eight under par at Kokstad Golf Club last Sunday, with rounds of 69 and 67, to win by just one from Kalvin van Rensburg (Toti) who had rounds of 71 and 66.
In the afternoon round Gavin birdied the first and then made nine straight pars.
“Just couldn’t get it going,” he said. And then he did, with five straight birdies from the 11th to the 15th. “Should have birdied the 16th as well,” he muttered, jokingly.
He nearly let it slip with a bogey on the closing hole. “I find the 18th difficult, hit it behind a tree both rounds, bogey both times.”
Overall, Gavin was pleased with the win, coming at the age of 55. He was full of praise for the course, saying the club had done a lot to improve the facilities and that the greens in particular were really good.
Defending champion, Cameron Olivant (Port Shepstone) was solid with scores of 70 and 69, only three back.
The teenager (16) was two over par through three holes in both rounds, which did not help his cause at all, but he fought back well and was pleased with his defence.
Cameron tied for third place with Jean-Marc Bouic (Southbroom), arguably one of the most consistent golfers anywhere on the planet right now.
Mark Cowie (Toti) was fifth on level par for the day, with Jan McDermott (Umdoni Park) next on +2.
Graham Sole (Southbroom) was the only other local golfer to make the trip and returned scores of 77 and 76, not bad for the amount of golf he has been playing.
