South Coast hockey duo shines for KZN

The sport is seeing something of a resurgence locally.

Hockey players Angela Bunge and Karmen Gill endured the highs and lows of the recent South African Masters hockey IPT held in Durban recently.

The two South Coasters decided to pick up their boots again and give it a go. And did they ever.

The duo starred in the forward line, occasionally switching to link forward when needed, for the KZN ‘A’ team and enjoyed some wonderful hockey.

There was all the usual agony and ecstasy that goes with such tournaments.

KZN played incredibly well and made it to the final, where they drew 1-1 with Southern Gauteng, conceding a goal in the last 40 seconds, and ultimately losing in a penalty shootout.

KZN scored in the first quarter and held the game almost till the end of what would have been a superb victory.

Southern Gauteng earned a short corner, scored, and then broke KZN hearts in the shootout.

“It was thrilling stuff, even if we came out on the wrong side of it. We got a silver medal, so it’s still all right,” said Angela.

“We had a fabulous team, including the likes of ex-Olympian Shelley Jones. Karmen played some phenomenal, cracking hockey.”

Despite the disappointment, there was a silver lining for Angela as she was selected for the South African Over 35s to play in the Netherlands in July.

She thanked Halfway Toyota Shelly Beach for sponsoring part of their kit for the recent tournament.

Back home, there are some exciting things in the pipeline for the local hockey club.
Angela said the sport has seen real growth in the past while and encouraged all who want to play to get involved.
