Margate Week bowls legacy set to continue

The competition attracts the finest local bowlers and many more from further afield.

Many things have come and gone, but Margate Week bowls is not one of them.

Now in its 58th year, this iconic open fours tournament has survived the test of time, including changing and challenging times, to rank as one of the most popular events on the bowls calendar.

The club, now 87 years old, is a landmark in the town, having survived and revived after severe flooding in early 2024 nearly destroyed it.

Margate Week will take place this year from April 20-24, attracting the finest local bowlers and many more from further afield.

Hollywoodbets has come on board as main sponsor, backing the local tournament, which now boasts R20 000 total in cash prizes.

Club president Yvonne Bausek thanked Hollywoodbets and the community for their support and looked forward to welcoming bowlers from near and far.

Some exciting things are planned for this year, including a Reunion Wednesday, where any former players are welcome to come down to the club on April 22 in the afternoon to share stories of yesteryear. Watch this space for more.

Margate BC was established in 1938 and serves as headquarters for the Kingfisher Bowling Association.

It’s a cherished gathering place for lawn bowlers of all ages and skill levels. Members are proud of the club’s history and the generations of players who have contributed to the legacy.

It went from an immaculate three green club to utter devastation in a matter of minutes.

Notwithstanding the resilience and determination of members, supporters and the committee, the impact of this tragedy is still being felt on a daily basis.

The club was closed for six months, reserves were depleted and a loss of membership resulted in reduced income after re-opening.

It was do or die in terms of survival and staff, members and volunteers got stuck in with cleaning up operations.

Two greens were rehabilitated and given a first class rating on greens condition within 12 months.

The third green now serves as home for Suidkus Jukskei Club.

Continued efforts are being made to increase membership, and three qualified coaches are available at no cost for all new bowlers.
