Vortex, Sideout Saints are volleyball champs

It was a day of high-octane indoor volleyball action at the Nkanini Indoor Sports Centre in Mtwalume.

The courts were lit up bright and it was a day of pure, non-stop action for 13 teams vying for the title, as Port Shepstone Volleyball Association hosted its second indoor knockout tournament at the Mtwalume Nkanini Indoor Sports Centre recently.

With no wind, there was no excuses, and from the first whistle to match point, every set was a battle. Quick sets, triple blocks and diving saves, the crowd never sat down.

Vortex men's team were crowned champions in the final. They are (back, from left) Lucannis Moodley, Tersius Fords, Deon Chetty, Jonard du Plessis, Kyle Naidoo and Kavi Pillay with Kyle Pillay and Rickeelin Singh in front. Absent from the photo is Geeva Chetty.

PRO Letitia Stoffels said: “The champions, Vortex men’s team and Sideout Saints ladies team, were the kings and queens of the court. Both teams played indoor volleyball like it was meant to be played, smart, fast, and fearless. This trophy wasn’t luck, it was hours in the centre, perfecting rotations, trusting each other on every three-touch. When finals pressure hit, they got calmer and better. A dominant, disciplined, 100% well-deserved win for both teams.”

Runners-up, Paragon ladies team and Sideout Cobras men’s team owned the indoor pace. Fast transitions, clean plays, and defence that refused to give up a free ball. Both teams pushed the final to the limit and made the champs earn every single point. Their grit, communication, and never-say-die energy, made them more than runners-up. That silver medal was earned the hard way.

The next volleyball knockout tournament will be hosted by Mega Star Wholesalers and will be played at the Nkanini Sports Centre on October 31, from 08:00.

The association thanks every team, coach, referee, supporter and sponsors for making the tournament a great success.
