Margate is the coast’s burglary capital

Homeowners feel defenceless and under siege because the government cannot protect its citizens.

IN spite of politicians’ best attempts to put a positive spin on the latest crime statistics, South Coasters are sceptical.

And they have good reason to be unconvinced that the police are winning the war against criminals.

Margate has been declared KwaZulu-Natal’s second most high-risk area for house robberies after the Durban suburb of Westville.

The most feared crimes are home invasions, hijacking, sex crimes and murder, all of which are on the increase on the South Coast.

Homeowners feel defenceless and under siege because the government cannot protect its citizens.

But instead of doing something proactive the police and politicians argue about the validity of their own statistics.

We need a police service that boasts members who want to serve not one that is staffed by those with criminals records or looking for sheltered employment.

The police need to come up with a strategy to combat crime and to ensure that brazen criminals, who have no fear that they will be punished, are arrested and successfully prosecuted.

And the politicians must stop interfering and placing cadres in top police posts. Saps should be led by someone who has risen through the ranks and understands what policing means.
