Spring of discontent
Perhaps the workers’ unhappiness stems from the municipal manager wanting better productivity and trying to halt their excessive overtime.
OVER the past few weeks there have been numerous strikes at South Coast businesses with workers downing tools and demanding better wages.
Last week workers at the Ugu District Municipality took to the streets baying for the head of municipal manager ‘DD’ Naidoo.
They (the protestors) claim he is corrupt and conditions at the municipality are worse than ever.
It is tempting to dismiss their accusations as just more protest action (or an excuse for not being at work) but could there be more to this discontent?
Perhaps the workers’ unhappiness stems from the municipal manager wanting better productivity and trying to halt their excessive overtime.
Or could it be that senior ANC party members don’t like being told how the municipality should be functioning?
Rest in peace Tony Abbott
ALTHOUGH Tony Abbott, who died last weekend, had no formal training as a botanist, five rare plants were named after him.
He was honoured with this recognition of his passion for finding unusual flora in his beloved Pondoland.
The banana and nut farmer from Port Edward loved exploring the coastal forests and reserves and he played a key role in opposing the dune mining along the Wild Coast.
Tony will be remembered as a humble man who was happy to share his knowledge.
