Car club and friends hunt for treasures
Navigators had to solve the rhyming clues to find their way.
WHEN Vanessa Howard-Tripp celebrates her birthday she wants everyone to have fun. And, being a bit unconventional, her birthday bashes are not the usual run of the mill parties. This year, she teamed up with the South Coast Classic Car and Bike Club to organise one of her famous travelling treasure hunts, for car club members and her friends.
Guests met at St Michael’s beach from where they set off on Vanessa’s magical mystery tour. Using the rhyming clues that Vanessa had composed to navigate the route, they had to answer questions, count various objects (not as easy as it sounds) and collect odds and ends like bits of bark, shells and even discarded socks along the way. A case of poetry in motion, maybe?

The chosen route took guests along the scenic backroads, inland from Uvongo and Port Shepstone and beyond, then back along Port Shepstone’s beachfront to Uvongo via the Main South Coast road. With a number of stops to scavenge for ‘treasures’ and solve the clues, the pleasant meandering route took about two hours to complete.
Only one party admitted to getting lost and everyone agreed that a treasure hunt was a great way to highlight the beauty of our area. Then it was time for the prizegiving, a delicious late lunch and a festive get together at Breakers in Uvongo.
If you haven’t yet been on one of Vanessa’s fabulous birthday four-wheel treasure hunts, see if you can wangle an invitation next year – and bring the youngsters along. They are far more observant than their parents and having them as part of your team is definitely an advantage.
