DURING this year’s July holiday season Port Edward in particular and other South Coast towns went without water for two weeks. The water supply had been intermittent since the previous December.
The seriousness of the problem prompted a visit by a MP from Parliament’s oversight committee. The Ugu District Municipality called on uMgeni Water to replace the pipeline in Munster.
But last weekend residents, holidaymakers and businesses were once again left without water and tankers had to be sent to central collection points.
This is not a great start to the South Coast’s busiest tourism season. Many businesses were forced to close their doors.
Accommodation establishments say they take little comfort in Ugu’s water management crisis committee which has been set up to attend to leaks.
Ugu needs R700-million to repair its aging pipes. The pressure is on.
