So far, so good

Our new year's wish for 2014 is to have spokesmen who can actually speak.

THANKS to glorious weather local beaches have been packed.

And in spite of the crowds, the season has, so far, been relatively incident free.

In the days leading up to Christmas, roads leading to the major shopping centres experienced high traffic volumes, however, these had not caused undue problems.

Both visitors and the business community have praised the effective law enforcement, crowd control and clean-up operations which have contributed to keeping things running smoothly on the South Coast.

On the flip side water and electricity interruptions were experienced in some areas.

Uvongo suffered numerous water cuts and Southbroom was literally left in the dark for two days.

The Herald has been inundated with letters, smses and phone calls from irate residents and holidaymakers complaining about the Ugu District Municipality.

They berated the municipality’s call centre which they claimed did not answer the phone or simply transferred them from one line to another or just dropped their calls which added to their frustration.

Herald reporters verified these sentiments when they received the same treatment from the `helpline’.

The municipal manager DD Naidoo, who is on holiday, was smsed and managed to get a statement issued.

Eskom promised to send a report about the power failure – but none was forthcoming – so we are like the residents of Southbroom still in the dark as to what caused the problem.
