Nice work if you can get it

Municipal manager Max Mbili says it is the 'duty' of the municipality to provide parking for its employees.

ALREADY fed up with the grace and favour lifestyle adopted by local government councillors, South Coast residents and ratepayers will not welcome the latest benefit they have given themselves.

If you are a municpal councillor or a traditional leader you will not have to pay to park your motor car when visiting Port Shepstone or Margate.

New meters, some of which are already operational, are being installed in both towns.

Municipal manager Max Mbili says it is the ‘duty’ of the municipality to provide parking for its employees and as councillors are ‘working’ for the municipality it was only fair that they get permits to park for free.

It costs R2 for 20 minutes or R6 an hour and if you don’t pay you will be liable for a R200 per violation fine.

Shopowners in Port Shepstone’s central business district believe the pay-to-park metering system will chase shoppers to the malls where they don’t have to pay to park.

As the song goes ‘nice work (being a councillor) if you can get it’.
