Parow show plagued by technical gremlins

The bad sound turned off a previously fired up crowd, and for that, there was no comeback.

JACK Parow is developing a reputation for two things: being late onto stage, and playing great shows. Unfortunately for the gathered crowd at Rocca Bar in Durban, he only lived up to half of that. Parow, who arrived on stage 15 minutes late and in a knee brace, gave his all in a set that made up for in sweat, energy and brandy what it lacked in technical ability.

But the show was largely spoiled as issue after issue reared its head during his set – firstly the sound wasn’t up to standard, leaving the Capetonian to complain: “This sounds more like a high school disco,” and secondly the DJ’s computer was cut off just before DansDansDans – leaving Parow to make do with the band and no beat.

But as they say, the show must go on – and nobody can blame Parow for the effort he put in to make sure that those who had gathered to see him had a great night. He kicked off with his acoustic music – something that he seemed keen to show off, even if it did seemed to be a strange choice to open the set with as it took some pace out of the night that had been buzzing before his arrival. However large sections of the gathered crowd didn’t seem to mind as they sung along to songs like DansDansDans and Last Laugh.

When the turn of the electric songs came, however, is when the set started to go wrong. Parow was clearly extremely frustrated with the sound quality in the venue – he even apologised many times to the crowd. However, even his most sincere apologies couldn’t stop the fans voting with their feet as they drifted away to other parts of the club that had audible songs playing in them and left the hardcore fans at the front raving on regardless.

While he proved that the show must go on with a rendition of Cooler as Ekke that got the crowd going once more – but the bad sound had turned off a previously fired up crowd, and for that, there was no comeback.

The night was finished off with Attack Kill Destroy, an absolute monster tune from Nag Van Die Lang Pette – and it even had Parow in amongst the crowd, signing along and partying like he was watching someone else up on stage. It was a great way to the end the night for the fans, and it showed just how much it meant to the rapper that everyone has a great time at every single one of his shows. Just choose the right venue next time.
