Litter-picks bring communities together

We salute their efforts.

TAKING pride in our landscape and ensuring we have a healthy environment is important.

And even more so when we have guests coming to stay.

Before the Easter weekend the people of Umtentweni held a community-driven litter-clearing initiative.

We salute their efforts as litter-picks are a great means of bringing communities together to meet, enjoy fresh air and tidy up.

Some are critical of councillors and politicians who get involved, labelling them ‘publicity seeking’.

We would love to see councillors and politicians striding through the streets and beachfront picking up litter, clearing the overgrown bush and filling potentially lethal potholes.

That would make a far better political statement than having another rally with blaring music and empty promises.

When visitors are expected most people give the house a good clean and use the best china and crockery.

The South Coast is due to host VIPs soon. It’s Africa Bike Week from May 1 to 4 and there are still no proper ablutions at our beaches.

And our roads are becoming a national disgrace in dire need of proper resurfacing. Hitting a pothole while driving a motor car is dangerous, on a motorcycle it could be lethal.
