Ugu urged to fix sewerage pipes

The municipality needs to relook at its core function - to provide water and sanitation.

MANY of the South Coast’s water supply and sewerage pipes are on the verge of cracking or rusting away.

Burst pipes and water leaks have become a regular occurrence.

The majority of the existing asbestos and steel pipes were installed more than 40 or 50 years ago and have undoubtedly reached the end of their effective lifespan as they are corroded.

The simple fact is that the district municipality is not investing in replacing or upgrading the infrastructure at a fast enough pace.

We are heading for a catastrophic component failure and prolonged disruptions – not a good attraction for an area where tourism is the main income earner.

We cannot afford burst pipes and sewage spills like the one which happened at the Umbango River last Thursday.

Ugu needs to relook at its core function – to provide water and sanitation – not to be an events company.
