Can we trust the crime stats?

It seems strange that no one checked these very important crime figures before they were released.

MARGATE homeowners will be delighted to know that burglary at residential premises dropped from 1 060 to just 90.

And more good news, there was not one shoplifting case reported in Margate compared to 233 cases the previous year.

There appear to be major discrepancies in the police’s annual crime statistics which were released last Friday.

Hibberdene is the region’s crime capital with 2 141 crimes having been reported while the safest place to live is Port Edward where only 204 crimes took place.

And crime decreased by 100 percent in Umzinto – no burglaries, carjacking, house or business robberies were reported there.

Sifting through the data has revealed some suspect statistics which the police need to explain.

The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) has blamed the errors on ‘cut and paste’ when importing the data onto the spreadsheet.

It seems strange that no one checked these very important crime figures before they were released.
