Musical strikes the right note
There was music and dance galore at Port Shepstone Civic Centre last Saturday.
IT was a full house at the ‘Sa Re Ga Ma’ Music School’s musical extravaganza at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre last Saturday. The event, hosted by local music teacher Vernon Govender, also saw him launch his third CD titled Bhakti Sangeedam.
The show contained a celebration of colourful and expressive eastern song and dance. Featuring famous South African devotional and classical singer, Mahenthri Pillay, the show ensured the hall was packed. Mahenthri held the audience spellbound with her sensational voice. Vernon said music is his life and his students form part of that life.
“You are my inspiration and motivation to take music to another level. I’m sure you questioned whether you would
ever be able to learn an instrument, well today is proof that you have indeed grown in leaps and bounds from that first day when you learnt your ‘Sa Re Ga Ma’ notations, to playing songs and now singing,” he explained. He added that his students had accomplished a great deal and he is indeed a proud teacher.
“Just a reminder, our future plans for ‘Sa Re Ga Ma’ Music School include visiting surrounding music schools in Durban, getting exposed to other professional Indian musicians who conduct workshops in Durban and attending cultural programmes and concerts, thus expanding our knowledge.”
Adding to the splendour of the evening, emcee, Jailoshini Naidoo of Lotus FM did a splendid job tickling the audience’s funny bones.
