Arts festival exceeds expectations

Local musicians gave their best at this well-attended festival.

LOCAL performers and musicians exceeded all expectations as they entertained a packed hall in Gamalakhe at the annual ‘Local Arts Against Crime’ festival last Saturday.

From live acoustic guitar and soulful acapella vocals to inspirational poetry and hip hop, the stage was ‘alive’ with sound and movement. The highlight of the event, though, was definitely the delightful opening performance of local singer and drama ‘queen,’ Vuyo Majeke of Southcity Christian College. After completing school, Vuyo intends to further her studies in the arts in Johannesburg or Cape Town.

Phumlani Mzobe ended the day with a thought-provoking talk on the importance of discipline and preparation in becoming the best artist one can be.

Organiser of the event, Mark Thornton-Smith of One Way Youth, said that many of the artists will be contacted by the Hibiscus Coast Municipality and used for future functions within the area. “Social development programmes of this nature are so important to impact the community from within, giving a hand-up as opposed to a hand-out,” he explained.
