Make your own mehndi in the comfort of your home

Save some money and learn how to make your own mehndi paste and apply it from your home with this easy tutorial.

Mehndi or “Mehendi” is a form of body art from Ancient India, in which decorative designs are created on a person’s body, using a paste, created from the powdered dry leaves of the henna plant.

Here is a step by step guide to making your own mehndi, as published by our sister publication, Rising Sun Lenasia

What you will need:

  • Mehndi leaves / powder
  • Container
  • Lemon juice
  • Three parts water
  • Sugar
  • Essential oils

Step 1: Either get mehndi leaves from a mehndi plant or purchase mehndi powder at a local store, ensuring that it is has a greenish-brown tint.

Step 2: Use a plastic, glass or ceramic container to place the amount of mehndi powder you would like in it.

Step 3: Mix together the one part of lemon juice with the three part water and thereadter add one teaspoon of your sugar and a few drops of essential oils. Stir all of these together until the sugar dissolves in the water.

Step 4: Use 2 tablespoons of the water solution and mix it with your mehndi powder, wait until the water is soaked by the powder then add another 2 tablespoons and mix / repeat process again until you have formed a paste, with the same consistency as mashed potatoes.

Once you have your paste, cover the container with a plastic wrap over night for approx., 6-7 hours. Last step is to scoop the mixture from the container into a plastic cone or applicator and start designing.
