2 South African fashion designers you need to know about

These young creatives who are at the cutting edge of local fashion.

CREATIVITY, style, and vision are timeless.

African fashion has been copied in the UK more or less since the ’70s, but copying aside, it’s hard to find clothes by African designers on the British high street.

Here are a two homegrown talents at the cutting edge of contemporary local fashion who have gained both local and international attention.

Sakhile Cebekhulu is a mixed media artist and fashion designer behind emerging local label SASH, however he considers himself more of a storyteller. “To me fashion is an avenue for me to tell authentic South African and African stories,” he explains.

Sakhile’s clothing is rooted, deeply, in his home and history. And draws from the country’s street style sensibilities — having lived in the country his whole life — to inform the overall look and feel of his contemporary clothing brand.

His debut autumn/winter 17/18 collection, titled Zulu Lami (My heaven), was presented at Xperience AFI Joburg earlier this month. The menswear collection seeks to break down elitist notions around fashion, according to Sakhile, while following design rules around functionality. Check out more of his work on @beingsash.

Trevor Stuurman is already a well-known name in South Africa’s fashion industry. Both his impeccable taste in clothing and his camera skills won him the title of ELLE Style Reporter in 2012, but that’s not his only claim to fame. Trevor is a stylist and blogger too, and he completed his postgraduate studies in Motion Picture. Trevor Stuurman has cemented himself as a leading light in South Africa’s creative community.
