Looking back on South Coast history: September 9 to 12
Power failures, bumpy roads and local politics remain topics of interest, but a cookery book and a beauty queen's wedding lighten this week's news.
MAKING provision for everyone in a growing urban area was a headache.

HAVING won her first title on the South Coast, the former Miss World was still considered a ‘local’ celebrity. “Penny Coelen, who made her début as a beauty queen at Margate and who afterwards became Miss World, is getting married next Wednesday.”

“THERE was great excitement at the Herald last Thursday afternoon when we learnt we had won the coveted Cronwright Trophy – for the second consecutive year!”1989
AND there’s nothing new about this story… “Almost the entire South Coast has been affected by power failures during the past week.”September 10
“THE United Party South Coast MPC was jeered, laughed at and threatened with ousting when he defended amalgamation at Umtentweni town hall.”
“BUMPING along the main highway to Margate nowadays is no pleasure, the many, many bad patches shaking all the pleasure out of the trip.”
“PUBLISHED this week, the Southbroom Women’s Institute Cookery Book is a unique and fascinating volume. Every one of the some 300 recipes has been contributed by a WI member.”
“A NEW shopping and residential centre is now being constructed at Ramsgate It will be the biggest single venture at the town and will stand at the corner of National and Fascadale Roads.”SOME dreams keep coming back again… and again… and…
“PORT Shepstone Chamber of Commerce’s dream of moving the railway line and station inland to Marburg and converting the beachfront to tourism could still become a reality.”

1952
“‘BY jumping from halfway down the gangplank onto the surf below me, I made sure I was the first of the 1882 Norwegian settlers to set foot in South Africa,’ 81-year-old Mr EN Haajem told the Maritzburg Rotary Club.”
1986
“YET again the troubled town of Bendigo faces a crisis following the resignation of five of its town board members, a situation which has left the town without leadership.”
