7 Surprising uses for common household salt – other than cooking and as a condiment!
These days it is so easy to spend a fortune on quick and convenient cleaning materials, but sometimes the old 'boereraad' remedies are the best. Bet there are one or two uses for table salt here that you never knew about.

Heavy metal
To eliminate calcium deposits, make a paste of lemon juice and salt and then use it to scrub off stains before rinsing thoroughly.

Burning issues
Left a pot or pan on a hot stove plate by accident? Don’t despair! Cover the entire bottom of your pot or pan with salt and leave for a few hours. Wash and watch the burnt bits scrape away with ease.

Grease … is the word
Salt works like magic on grease stains. Sprinkle the stain with a generous quantity of salt and leave overnight. Lightly scrub with soap before washing the item as usual.

Breathe new life
Soak tired sponges in a bowl of salt and hot water and they will be like new!

Strike while the iron is hot
If your iron is looking a bit tarnished, place a layer of salt onto grease-proof paper, plug in your iron and gently press it over the salt, ironing like you would a shirt. The dirty bits should be gone when you’re finished.

Put it out
To extinguish fire around a stove, dump salt onto the flames. This will put paid to the fire immediately.

Put that in your pipe…
To unclog sinks or treat clogged pipes, salt is a perfect solution. Pour 2 to 3 tablespoons of salt into the clogged sink, leave for a couple of hours and rinse thoroughly with hot water.
