20 Things you didn’t know about yourself

Did you know? The muscles that cause your eyes to focus move more than 100,000 times a day.

1. Each night you grow between 1 and 3 inches
In the morning you are 1 to 3 inches taller than the night before. It’s because daytime gravity does its job and causes you to shrink. While you are asleep your body stretches out again.

2. Your fingertips are so sensitive, if they were as large as our earth, you could still feel the difference between a house and a car.

3. You can see a flickering candle from 25 miles away.

4. You’re half a banana.
50 percent of a banana’s DNA is the same as ours.

5. Every 30 days you take on a new skin.
We don’t realise it, but actually we lose 40,000 skin cells per hour. Where do they go? Dust on your tables, TV, photo frames – yes, some of that’s you.

6. Your blood goes to the moon every 20 days
11 806 miles is the average distance your blood travels in your body everyday. That’s about 1 /20th of the average distance to the moon.

7. You are 90 percent bacteria and fungi.
Just the bacteria in your intestines weigh more than a kilo. 90 percent of the cells in our body are bacteria and fungi.

8. Your brain requires a lot to work.
Although it represents only two percent of our total body weight, the brain consumes 20 percent of our oxygen intake and 20 percent of our calories are burned by our brain.

9. Your nails grow like snails.
Human fingernails grow about 2-3 mm per month, slightly faster for men than for women.

10. Women’s hair is twice as strong as men’s.
According to a German study from 1969 women’s hair is considerably stronger than men’s. Women’s hair would have a tensile strength of approximately 1,600 pounds, while for men it is ‘only’ 720 pounds.

11. You workout your eyes everyday.
The muscles that cause your eyes to focus, move more than 100,000 times a day. If you would like to give the muscles in your legs the same workout, you have to walk 75 kilometers every day.

12. In 60 seconds
A human blood cell takes about 60 seconds to make a full tour of your body.

13. Your brain works more at night than during daytime.
The human brain is actually more active at night than during the day. When you turn off the physical stuff, your brain turns on.

14. The smarter you are, the more you dream.
People with higher IQs have more dreams.

15. Your stomach acid can dissolve razor blades.
Every three days, the cells in your stomach will be completely renewed.

16. You don’t have small bladder.
Your bladder is about as big as a tennis ball. It varies from person to person, but the bladder can hold between 800 ml and 1 liter.

17. You’re not a great light.
Your brains consume as much energy as a 10 watt light bulb.

18. Your nose can recognise 50,000 different smells.

19. You fart around 14 times per day.
Between 12 and 25 every day. At least if you’re healthy.

20. Women fart more than men.
Women will never admit it. When they eat the exact same food, women produce even more gas than men.
