Looking back on South Coast history: October 17 to 20
Separate amenities, environmental issues and soft furnishings all found their way into the headlines.
ORGANIC gardening was a popular topic of discussion.
October 17
1952
“A DEMONSTRATION on the making of compost at the Port Shepstone Women’s Institute October meeting was most appropriate.”
1975
SOME developments could have an impact on the environment. “A Firm decision on the proposed cement factory on the banks of the Mzimkhulu river will be made early next year.”
1980
OTHERS were less likely to upset the balance of nature. “Plans are already under way to develop a ski-boat base at Shelly Beach.”
October 18
1935
“MENTION was made of an article in the press on the cemetery, it being pointed out that plots were purchased by individuals and were their responsibility.”
THE Beach Tea Room was under discussion again. “Agreed to advise Mr Treeby that council had no further need of his services. Price to be secured from outside architect.”
AND the council received a letter from Margate Publicity Association, asking for cooperation in securing ambulance to serve the district.

STILL in 1935… “Dame Nature seems determined that the Mzimkhulu river mouth shall be well and properly sealed. On Tuesday evening there was but the smallest of channels allowing the river to flow. But wait till we get our harbour …”
BUT some things were being fixed, even if not everyone was satisfied. “The reconstruction of the steps that lead to the post office is a step in the right direction and it is now to be hoped that the next move will be the shifting of the post office nearer the steps.”
1946
“THERE can be little doubt that if 50 new houses were built on spec in Port Shepstone today, most of them would be purchased outright within a week and there would be no difficulty in finding tenants for the remainder.”
MEANWHILE a resolution was passed at the annual general meeting of the Hindu Social Club that all persons of Indian descent, irrespective of religion, were eligible for membership and could take part in the activities of the club.

October 19
1956
“HEARTIEST congratulations to Ronnie Cooper on his capture, this week, of a record bronze bream of nine-and-a-half pounds. Fishing his usual haunts at Southport, he landed this fine specimen and also an exceptional galjoen.”
1979
SERIOUS business… “Margate is to be de-amalgamated.”
AND something a bit lighter… “Two lounge suite cushions were blown off a truck in Port Shepstone on Tuesday. You can claim them from the South Coast Herald.”
1990
“THE scrapping of the Separate Amenities Act this week would have little or no effect on Lower South Coast authorities, according to their town clerks.”
October 20
1972
“THE Umkomaas Town Board has revived the beach zoning controversy by placing ‘Whites Only’ boards along its beachfront.”
