4 Fun Halloween costume ideas for children living by the sea

So there you have it! Who said Halloween had to only be scary? Let your kids be cute instead!

“Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.”

Halloween is upon us and we’re excited. While Halloween is not as widely celebrated here as it is in the States, it still is fun to plan a spooky costume – especially for the kids.

Scuba Steve is the adorable ‘character’ in Big Daddy (starring Adam Sandler) who gets little Sebastian to take a bath. The character was invented by Adam Sandler and based on a doll he had when he was a child called ‘Diver Dan’.

To make this adorable outfit you will need:

  • A red onesie (long sleeve)
  • Yellow material for the emblem and the flippers
  • Goggles
  • A 2 litre bottle
  • Black spray paint
  • Black pipe (can be attached to pacifier)

3.     Ariel’s Mermaid Tail from The Little Mermaid

Every little girl’s dream was and still is to be a mermaid, and especially the red headed princess from ‘Under the Sea’ with her decorative starfish hairclip in her hair.

YOU MAY BE INTERESTED IN: It’s Halloween – get your ‘creep’ on!

There are two pieces to this outfit, namely the purple clam halter neck and the green mermaid tail. We got our tail inspiration from ‘Shabby Beach Nest’ who made an adorable Ariel tail for her daughter.

For the mermaid tail

  • Green tulle (preferably darker)
  • Green stretchy fabric
  • Green elastic sequins (for the green belt)
  • Green nylon thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Measuring tape
  • Ruler
  • Pins

For the starfish hairclip

  • Hair clip
  • Starfish
  • Sponge or ribbon
  • Glue gun

For the purple clam top

For a more conservative look, paint the purple clams on a white T-shirt . If you want to go the authentic route, you can use a purple bikini top and glue a clam shaped creation on top.

4.     Octopus

Undoubtedly one of the cutest outfits for the little ones, this outfit is a tad on the difficult side and will require some form of sewing. If you do not own a sewing machine (or would rather not attempt) purchase four pairs of nylon tights in the same colour as the material that can be stuffed with stuffing.

This cute outfit can be attempted in a variety of ways but we have chosen the design below with tentacles attached at the hip as it is relatively simple to master and many items can be easily found.

For this costume you will need:

  • Material of your choosing
  • Stuffing
  • Elastic
  • Eyes
  • Matching beanie (excess fabric can be used as well)
