Great white shark: 8 Things you may not have known about this magnificent (and feared) creature
The great white shark may have a reputation as a ferocious killer, but it's also carrying a conservation status of 'vulnerable'.
Sharks are generally feared, usually misunderstood, and probably (ironically) mostly in need of protection.
1. The great white shark is also known by a few other names, including great white, white pointer, white shark, or white death.
2. It is a species of large mackerel shark which can be found in the coastal surface waters of all the major oceans.
3. It’s scientific name is carcharodon carcharias.
4. Fully grown, adult great whites can weigh anywhere between 680kg and 1100kg.
5. In short bursts, the great white can reach up to a speed of 40km/h.
6. The conservation status is currently ‘vulnerable’.
7. In terms of length, the great white can reach 4.5 to 6.4m (female) and 3.5 to 4m (male).
8. On an average, a great white shark has a litter size of about 2-10 pups.
