How many colours in the rainbow?

South Africa has been nicknamed the ‘Rainbow Nation’ due to its rich cultural diversity.

In the book of Genesis, after the story of Noah and the flood, it is recorded that God promises never to flood the whole Earth again.

The sign of this covenant with Noah is the rainbow.

Rainbows appear in seven colours.

This is because water droplets break white sunlight into the seven colors of the spectrum.

These colours are:

1. Red

2. Orange

3. Yellow

4. Green

5. Blue

6. Indigo

7. Violet

You can only see a rainbow if the sun is behind you and the rain in front.
