5 Romantic movies to watch this Valentine’s Day

If you have no plans to go out tonight, make some popcorn, snuggle up with your partner and enjoy a cosy night in front of the telly or laptop.

Our sister Caxton publication, Mpumalanga News, has compiled this list of movies for die-hard romantics to enjoy:

  1. 50 Shades Freed

This is a 2018 American erotic romantic drama film  based on the novel of the same name by E. L. James. It is the third and final installment in the Fifty Shades film series after Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker. The film stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, respectively, and follows the newlywed couple as they must deal with the sins of their past.

 2. Happiness Is a Four-letter Word

Based on the novel of the same name by Nozizwe Cynthia Jele,the movie tells the story of three friends trying to find their happiness while maintaining images of success and acceptability. It revolves around three women. Glamorous trophy housewife Zaza, played by Khanyi Mbau, seems to be living the new South African dream of money, success, and loving partners. Lawyer and compulsive perfectionist Nandi, played by Mmabatho Montsho, whose life from the outside is perfect, has a great career and forthcoming nuptials, but in reality she is suffocating. Trendy art gallery owner and serial dater Princess is played by Renate Stuurman. The three friends juggle life’s surprising changes as they come to learn that “happiness doesn’t come with a manual”. The three will have to find out what truly makes each of them happy and then fight to get it in their unique way.

3. Pretty Woman

A successful and wealthy lawyer ( Richard Gere) travels to Los Angeles for a business trip and hires a female escort ( Julia Roberts) to accompany him for a week of swanky parties and business dinners. Originally intended to be a dark cautionary tale about class and sex work in Los Angeles, the film was reconceived as a romantic comedy with a large budget. It was widely successful at the box office and became one of the highest-grossing films of 1990.

 

4. Just Wright

Just Wright is a 2010 American romantic comedy film starring Queen Latifah and Common that tells the story of a physical therapist who falls in love with a professional basketball player. The film received mixed reviews from critics.

5. Best Man Holiday

Nearly 15 years after they were last together as a group, college friends Lance (Morris Chestnut), Harper (Taye Diggs), Candace (Regina Hall), Quentin (Terrence Howard), Robyn (Sanaa Lathan), Jordan (Nia Long), Murch (Harold Perrineau), and Mia (Monica Calhoun) finally reunite over the Christmas holidays. Though much has changed in their lives, the friends discover just how easy it is for long-forgotten rivalries and passionate romances to be reignited.
