Toilet roll wars: Over beats under – and that’s official!

THE never-ending debate of ‘over versus under’ toilet paper argument can officially be laid to rest.
A diagram showing the correct way to place toilet paper surfaced a while ago after someone had discovered it online. The diagram by Seth Wheeler, the inventor of perforated toilet paper, illustrated his creation with the toilet paper going up and over the roll and not from under.
The whole idea of perforated toilet paper was brought about when Mr Wheeler sought ways to prevent wastage as part of the Wheeler’s Albany Perforated Wrapping Paper Company in 1871. His idea then became a reality in roll-form in 1891.
Toilet roll holders were then designed to hold the rolls of paper in a way that allowed people to use it easily with no wastage.

The ‘over method’ prevents waste as more toilet paper is wasted when placed on the holder in the ‘under method’ because people cannot see the tearing points as easily as they should. Some people also like the ‘over method’ for hygiene purposes too.
This method doesn’t let the paper touch the wall, reducing the possibility of germs getting on it.
Also, when it comes to printed paper, such as the Labrador puppies we all love on each sheet, the rolls are placed in the over method so whatever is printed on the toilet paper is not placed upside down.
