ICYMI: Mermaid mania – a new fitness and fantasy trend is taking the world by storm

Mermaid schools and fitness classes, the latest trend in exercising, are popping up all over the show - from Canada to the US, England, Holland, France and the Philippines.

And what little girl hasn’t dreamed of becoming Ariel? In The Little Mermaid, Ariel yearns for a pair of human legs, but with this trend, everyone wants a mermaid tail.

At these schools, girls of all ages, can release their inner mermaid and learn to swim like one. Most of these schools supply tails, some of which simply slip over your feet and others that are part of a longer costume which comes up to the waist.

A mermaid school in Canada promises to transform swimmers – adults and kids – into shimmering, graceful mermaids with the help of colourful artificial tails that they supply.

Before they can glide through the water, though, students have to learn how to swim with the tail. Instructors progress from basic tail-swimming lessons to advanced underwater choreography techniques.

But becoming a mermaid isn’t as easy as it sounds apart from having to breathe under water. The classes include mermaid swimming techniques, synchronized swimming, monofin swimming, mermaid dances and acrobatic movements as well as endurance, cardio, breathing and speed.

Watch: Mermaid school makes a splash.

Unfortunately it seems that South Africa hasn’t cottoned on to mermaid schools yet, but it’s a gap that will probably be filled soon as mermaid mania grows.
