Looking back on South Coast history: July 1 to 7
Sardines, shark nets, a plague of flies and a four-legged film star made the news in the first week of July.
Some stories are totally predictable at this time of year.
July 1
1994
“Sardine fever finally hit the Lower South Coast last weekend.”
July 2
1993
There’s nothing new about complaints about toll fees. “Exorbitant toll fees have driven motorists and transport operators away from using the Lower South Coast toll road.”
1999
And “Fly plague sets off petition at Southport” seems to be a recurring moan.
July 3
1998
There had been worries about local councils being able to afford the Sharks Board’s new rates, but: “Province will help to offset the major shark meshing increases facing coastal local authorities this year.”
July 5
1996
“Do South Coasters know we have a retired film star living on our coast? Do they know he is only seven-and-a-half years old, one foot high and loves nothing better than to swim and fetch sticks in the sea? His name is Japie and he stars in the new Jock of the Bushveld movie.”
July 7
1995
“At least 16 people, including a church minister, were murdered in separate incidents, during one of the most violent weekends on the South Coast this year.”
2000
The police did well. “Port Edward police have made major inroads into the crime problem in that area, with 56 arrests for offences ranging from murder to escaping from custody.”
And the criminal justice system played its part to end the week on a positive note. “Several members of a gang of rapists and armed robbers have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms.”
