[PICTURES] – Same Love makes history at Amanzimtoti’s first Pride event

Live music, dress-up and loads of other exciting activities were seen throughout the day. But, aside from the fun events, a moment of silence and candle lighting veil was held for all those who have been brutally murdered in the recent spate of hate crimes.

Hope and love was felt by all who attended Same Love Toti’s first Pride event on Saturday, 26 June.  Local LGBTI performers such as poets, spoken word artists, musicians and other creative individuals were given the platform to share their thoughts and feelings.

The special event was also graced by the presence of several delegates including the US Consul General, Anne Linnee, who also shared kind words. She visited Amanzimtoti for the first time and addressed the audience with grace while demonstrating her support for the LGBTI community. Ward 97 councillor, André Beegte, and communications officer of Amanzimtoti SAPS, Captain Charlene van der Spuy, also join in the celebrations. Vodacom sponsored a new phone, T-shirts, masks and mugs as prizes.

Same Love Toti and Friends Family Restaurant hosted a month-long celebration which culminated with the art explosion. Live music, dress-up and loads of other exciting activities were seen throughout the day. But, aside from the fun events, a moment of silence and candle lighting veil was held for all those who have been brutally murdered in the recent spate of hate crimes.

“Our thanks go to our VIP guests for their support of LGBTI lives and livelihoods. Thanks go to the staff at Friends, to the volunteers at Same Love Toti, to the artists and performers, to those selling their pride fashion line, and to all that shared in this magical day in so many ways. We couldn’t have done it without you,” said the founder of the organisation, Kim Lithgow.

The historic event also ended with a fashion show, drag and loads of fun.
