Proud gran takes a bow after grandson’s bowhunting success

THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD Damian Simpson, grandson of former Umkomaas resident, Maureen Simpson who now lives in the UK, earned a gold medal at the world bowhunting championships held outside Potchefstroom in early October.

Damian also lives in Potchefstroom and according to his proud father, Andy has won numerous club medals and in 2011 won a gold in the South African champs for long bow at cub level.

“His interest in bow shooting started about six years ago when I started shooting. As all fathers, they like their sons to do what they are doing,” said Andy.

Currently Damian is uncertain how far he intends to pursue the sport. “As with all young boys they don't know what they want to do. Hopefully he will keep it up in the years to come, as it is already becoming a school sport. This sport traditional archery does not have much media coverage at the moment, but I am sure that will change in the future.”
