Number of passengers killed in Sappi taxi accident

A number of passengers have been killed after a mini-bus taxi ploughed into a stationary truck on the Sappi premises in Umkomaas on Friday afternoon, 22 November.

According to regional communications manager, Zelda Schwalbach, the number of dead and injured still need to be verified. “Details are sketchy, but it appears a privately-owned runaway mini-bus taxi crashed through the Sappi boom gate and smashed into a stationary truck,” she said.

Emergency teams are on site, as well as helicopters to transport the injured to hospitals.
