Beware of stokvel thefts

POLICE urge stokvel clubs to use electronic banking.

“As we near the end of the year many stokvel clubs will be distributing large sums of money to their members. We urge these clubs to transfer these funds electronically to their members accounts to avoid them from being robbed,” said Col Jay Naicker of the KZN police media centre.

Last year a number of stokvel clubs reported they were robbed after they had withdrawn cash for distribution.

“We also had many members' of stokvels reporting they were robbed at their homes after they received their contributions. It is evident people are being robbed by individuals who are close to them and who are aware they will be receiving such a payout. Last weekend two people claimed they were robbed of their stokvel money at their homes. We encourage employers to transfer their staff’s bonuses and salaries into their bank accounts during December, as carrying large sums of money will expose them to criminal elements.”
