Mark (48) and Christine (42) Aiton decided to sleep in their car close to Montrose flats instead of returning of Johannesburg as it was raining and they had experienced car trouble earlier. “We parked under a light and Mark put a duvet on the verge as he felt warm and went to sleep,” said Christine, still emotional from their ordeal.
“I was sleeping in the car when I awoke at about 1.30am with one man in the car, trying to pull me out.” Another man attacked Mark outside the car with a brick. Christine was hit in the chest and was bruised from fighting off her assailant.
The two men made off with their car keys, spare key and Mark’s wallet. “We are stranded in Toti with nowhere to stay, as a new car key costs R4,300 and we are both unemployed,” said Christine. “I don’t know how we are going to get back to Johannesburg.”
Police collared one suspect in an abandoned building in the vicinity. Christine positively identified the thief as the one who attacked her in the car, but police released the man as they said there was not enough evidence.
