Crafty volunteers needed
DO you have spare time on your hands and a skill which could be of benefit to others?
Then join Operation Bobbi Bear as a volunteer at one of its two long-standing projects.
Every Friday from 10am a large group of women gather under a tree in Lower Illovo, which has been aptly named the ‘Tree Clinic’ and which is overseen by Bobbi Bear staff.
“We focus on counselling, training, community development, income generation, activism and lobbying,” said founder and director of Bobbi Bear, Jackie Branfield.
If you have skills in arts and crafts, icing a cake or sewing, go down to the clinic and lend a hand. “We are looking for committed volunteers.”
The organisation’s second project – a support group for children – meets at the Tree Clinic on Saturday mornings. “We have about 150 children, all part of the Bobbi Bear family. The support group aims to build the children’s self-esteem and to motivate them to achieve more.”
The children are involved in various activities such as modelling, dance and soccer. A coach is urgently needed to assist the soccer team. At the end of the meeting, children are given sandwiches, cold-drinks and sweets.
“We welcome donations of food and clothes. Everything your child needs, our children need.” The organisation is looking for donations of 2-litre cold-drink bottles and green glass beer bottles. All items can be dropped off at the NGO’s premises in Doonside.
