Off-duty lifesavers rescue three swimmers at beach near Umgababa
While popular with fisherfolk, the beach claims several lives each year, and several rescues are performed periodically.
THREE young men were rescued at eNyokeni Beach in Danganya after getting into trouble while swimming on October 31. Situated between Umgababa and Umkomaas, the beach is not designated for swimming, and there are no lifeguards stationed on it.

National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said the incident happened at around 16:15. By sheer coincidence, NSRI Rocky Bay lifeguard, who is also an Amanzimtoti Surf Lifesaving Club member, Sphesihle Mngadi, was nearby at the time and responded. eThekwini lifeguards who were off duty at the time and nearby the scene also responded. The ages of the victims ranged from 15 to 20.
“On arrival on the scene, Mngadi found three males appearing to be in distress, caught in rip currents in the mid-break surf zone. He launched into the surf zone armed with a rescue torpedo buoy, and he was able to reach the males in the mid-breakers, guiding one, who was able to float on his back, to the beach. He swam the remaining two, using the aid of the rescue torpedo buoy, to the beach,” said Lambinon.
One of the rescued individuals was non-responsive when they were brought to shore, and Mngadi applied chest compressions until the person regained consciousness. He was taken to the hospital by his family members while the other two required no medical assistance.
