Cuta catch is right medicine for Toti doctor
A local doctor's passion for fishing has led him to be featured on the front cover of a popular magazine.
Bertus Gericke submitted a photograph of his 26kg cuta which he caught on his fishing ski. “I just thought it was a great photo and thought I’d sent it in,” said Bertus.
The July edition of the popular South Afrian fishing magazine ‘Go Fish’ shows Bertus with his big catch. The 38-year-old general practitioner started fishing in his childhood. Bertus started fishing from a fishing ski in 2001. “I love fishing on a fishing ski. I’m completely on my own out on the ocean – at my happy place. It’s great watching the sun rise and then suddenly your reel goes off with a big fish and you’re being dragged half a kilometre,” said Bertus.
The local doctor studied in Pretoria and qualified as a general practitioner in 2000. Bertus is a member of Winklespruit Fishing Ski Club. He says joining a fishing club like Winklespruit Fishing Ski Club is great for fishing newcomers. “Through joining the club, fishermen can give each other advice and it allows you to learn from fishermen who are knowledgeable,” said Bertus.
On great fishing spots, Bertus’ favourite places to drop a line are on the South Coast and in Paindaine in Mozambique.
The fishing enthusiast still wants to catch a goliath tiger fish in Africa and a giant tarpon in the Mexican Gulf. To join Winklespruit Fishing Ski Club contact club captain Trevor on 084-607-6655 or Gert on 082-563-9751.
