AfriForum branch opens in Toti

The launch takes place at Kuswag Skool at 6pm.

AfriForum will launch a branch in Toti on Thursday, 31 July.

AfriForum is a non-governmental organisation registered as a non-profit company, with the aim of protecting the rights of minorities.

The branch will assist Toti residents to address problems regarding local government affairs, environmental issues and community safety.

“We will be actively involved, especially in the local government sphere to stop the dilapidation of municipalities. Taxpayers are entitled to services in terms of the Constitution,” said provincial co-ordinator for AfriForum in KZN, Chris Fourie.

AfriForum is already assisting the community by helping to solve the pollution of the Toti River. Water samples were taken and are being tested by an independent South African National Accreditation System-accredited laboratory.

The Blue Scorpions have also been requested to intervene after eThekwini Municipality fined the culprits who pollute the river, but continue spilling their waste in the stormwater systems.

“AfriForum is there to protect the rights of the Toti community and act as watchdog against the municipality if they do not perform their duties,” said Chris.

AfriForum already has more than 130 branches across South Africa and is helping create more effective and safer towns across the country.

The local branch structure consists of volunteers.

“At this stage there will not be an office however, once it is financially viable, we will appoint a full-time co-ordinator for the Toti branch with an office,” said Chris.

Join the AfriForum Toti branch by SMSing ‘Amanzimtoti’ to 45267, at a cost of R1 per SMS.
