IN an uncanny twist of fate, two beach buggies, both blue in colour crashed 30 minutes apart, the first in William Brown Road, Illovo Beach and the second in Gus Brown Road, Warner Beach on Monday afternoon, 4 August.
In the William Brown Road incident, it is alleged the driver suffered an epileptic seizure as he drove down the road. “The buggy smashed into a concrete wall, veered off and hit a light pole. The vehicle was wedged between the pole and the wall. The driver was trapped and sustained serious injuries. He was taken out on a spinal board,”said Netcare 911 media liaison, Chris Botha.
The buggy’s fuel tank was ripped off and the vehicle broke in half.
Thirty minutes later paramedics rushed to Gus Brown Road, where a second beach buggy was involved in a similar incident. “Three people were in the car in the driveway and were going fishing at the time. The buggy jumped out of gear, the gates closed and it rolled down, smashing into the house. One passenger sustained serious injuries, including lacerations,”said Chris.
Travis Cottrell witnessed the incident. “I was riding my bike up Gus Brown Road and was the first person there as it happened. A beach buggy was reversing down a driveway and somehow fell off the steep driveway and into an alley between the driveway and house. There were two people in the front who were okay but badly shaken. There was an old man sitting in the back with some fishing gear and was injured badly. He was awake and responding to us but needed to be transported to hospital.”
The injured were taken to GJ Crookes Hospital.
