The club wishes all nine athletes all the best as they travel to George and congratulations on their KZN selection.
Fourteen of the club’s junior runners, the most in recent history, were selected for the Umlazi District Schools cross-country team which competed against 11 other districts at the very competitive KZN schools cross-country championships this weekend. All acquitted themselves well, with top 20 positions from Hlengiwe Zuma (seventh), Amahle Mfeka (15th), Storm Alexander (15th) and Wikus Herbst (19th). With another excellent performance, Lee-anne Blake took the girls 13 KZN schools cross-country title to complete the double after she also won the KZN clubs cross-country title the previous week.
Twenty nine Toti athletes travelled to the Mandela Marathon on Sunday, 31 August. The races comprised of 42.2km, 21.1km and 10km distances. Thanks to Martyn and Richard from Budget Van Rental for getting all the athletes to the start of the marathon safely
A cold front moved in over the weekend so conditions at Sunday’s start were windy and cold which many athletes braved in only a vest and pair of shorts. The start was not very pleasant but after the singing of the national anthem and the gun firing, the cold was forgotten as the athletes started their journey to Howick and the Mandela capture site.
The 21km club champs takes place on 21 September at the SAPS Striders Heritage Challenge at Kings Park Athletic Stadium with a 6.30am start.
As the Comrades entries officially opened from 1 September, club members used the Mandela Marathon as a qualifier for the 2015 up run. Special mention must be made of Johnathan who has only been running for about a year. All his hard work and Sunday long runs finally paid off as he completed his first-ever marathon in a time of 4.54.31, which is a great achievement. The Mandela Marathon is a tough event where the athletes climb almost the first 14km as they leave Pietermaritzburg. Another Comrades qualifier is the Ethekwini Township to Township Marathon on Sunday, 28 September. Pre-entries close on 15 September. The first man home in the Mandela Marathon was M Cele in a time of 3.03.42.
