A man was shot and killed and another arrested by police after the murder of a security guard in Clairwood led police on a chase through Merebank on Tuesday, 23 December.
At about 12.30pm two taxi violence security guards were approached by two men, while they stood by their car on the road alongside the M4. The men were asking about taxi routes when one of them pulled out a gun and shot 38-year-old Khayalethu Contsana in the head.
The two men then fled with the murdered security guard’s 9mm parabellum service gun along the railway line towards Simla Road in Merebank. Wentworth SAPS officers searched the area for the men, with the aid of security guards from the taxi violence unit. Captain S Perumal found the men, who started shooting at him in his vehicle, then fled into Gulmal Crescent after the officer fired two shots back at them.
Provincial task team member, Warrant officer Derrick Naicker and security guard, Mr Soobramoney found one of the men hiding in the Crescent. He began shooting randomly at the W/O and security guard, who returned fire and killed him in a yard in Merebank. The other man, a 27-year-old, was found and arrested.
A gun was seized from each of the shooters. The dead shooter, aged about 25-years-old, went by the nickname, ‘ChiliBoy’, but his real name is not yet known.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate officers, Gumede and Shibe are investigating the incident.
