A MONTHLY full moon beach walk from Baggies to Winkle and back is growing in popularity, to the delight of Yvonne Dixie who suggested the event at the inaugural meeting of My Sapphire CommUnity in December last year.
At the first walk in January, about 35 people turned up and at the second event on Wednesday, 4 February, the numbers more than quadrupled to about 160 people. “I wanted to arrange such an event to bring the community together. It is a happy and satisfying feeling to see such a positive response,” said Yvonne.
The next full moon walk is on Thursday, 5 March. “If it is raining, it will take place the next day.”
All walkers must meet at Baggies, the walk starts at 6pm. Everyone walks at their own pace. Dogs are welcome, but ensure your pet is on a leash.
The walk takes about an hour and Yvonne described the mood at the last two events as ‘light-hearted and happy’.
Yvonne, who lives in Doonside, is passionate about the area. “I grew up in Illovo Beach. I met my husband, Clyde there.” Having relocated to Durban in 1988, the couple settled back in the area in 2013.
