Sixty solid years of marriage for Lamberts

They celebrated their milestone with a cruise to Cape Town.

IT was a milestone celebration for Tabor residents in Winklespruit, Sheila and Mervyn Lambert who toasted 60 years of marriage on Thursday, 16 April.

To commemorate their diamond anniversary, the couple enjoyed a cruise to Cape Town and a big family get together in Johannesburg.

The Lamberts met while living in Randfontein. “We knew each other from our primary school days,” said Sheila.

However, they only got together after Mervyn partnered Sheila to the Coronation Ball in 1953. “My friend, a nurse, was getting engaged and she was attending the ball. I wanted to go but I didn’t have a partner. She suggested Mervyn who was a patient in the hospital at the time. When I met him, I realised I knew him from my school days,” said Sheila.

Two years later the couple tied the knot.

“Through the years we have had arguments and highs. We have done everything together, we played golf and tennis together and have always been a strong family unit,” said Sheila.

Mervyn, who was in the electrical engineering field retired in 1993. Soon after, they moved to a flat in Toti and then back to Johannesburg for just over four years before moving to Tabor where they have been happily living for the past eight years.

“For a good relationship and strong marriage, it is important a couple is of the same religion and background. They need to work together,” advised Mervyn.

Sheila keeps busy crocheting and knitting for the needy. She is also involved in bingo at Mooi Hawens and other activities and events in the complex.

The Lamberts have two sons, two daughters, nine grandchildren and two great grand-daughters.
