Water restored in Athlone Park and surrounds

Almost a week after a steel bracket securing a trunk main was stolen.

THE water supply to Athlone Park and surrounds was restored on Thursday, 23 April, almost a week after a steel bracket securing a 375mm trunk main located under a bridge, adjacent to the golf course along Prospecton Road was stolen last week.

This caused the trunk mains to be dislodged from its joints for some 300m.

“The theft was discovered during one of the city’s regular, routine inspections on Friday, 17 April. The line was immediately isolated to prevent water loss and possible damage to the bridge. The 300m sagging steel pipe is currently being replaced by a temporary 300m PVC pipe,” said eThekwini Municipality’s communications head,Tozi Mthethwa.

The city has worked around the clock to solve this problem and restore water supply to affected communities.

“The municipality expresses sincere gratitude to residents and the business community around the affected area for their unwavering support in pro-actively dealing with the situation while we were restoring the water supply.”

The municipality urges residents to report illegal water connections, vandalism or theft of municipal infrastructure to 080-13 13 013, email eservices@durban.gov.za, SMS 43554 or fax 031-311- 8220.
