Academy serves up tennis coaching

A two-week tennis camp starts at Amanzimtoti Tennis Club, from Monday, 6 July.

A DEVELOPMENT academy has been started for young, budding tennis stars from Lovu Township, Adams Mission and KwaMakhutha at Amanzimtoti Tennis Club at Hutchison Park.

On Saturday, 20 June several of the youngsters, though small in stature were easily hitting balls over the net under the guidance of coach, Wandile Sivetge.

The Toti Sport Tennis Academy is the brainchild of Thula Makhanya and it aims to find talented youngsters with the potential to go far in the sport.

“We already have up and coming stars from these areas. Nosipho Makhanya attended Louisiana State University on a tennis scholarship. Currently, Thembo Makhanya a grade 10 pupil at Westville Boys High School, is also on a tennis scholarship, along with Nonhlanhla Msomi, a grade 11 pupil of Strelitzia Secondary who is also a provincial player.”

About 15 children who are U10 attend training sessions on Saturdays and Sundays. The aim is to also train during the week.

“We want to develop young talent, to give them a chance of achieving big and becoming world-class players. They can build a successful career with tennis.”

With the school holidays in full swing from next week, a two-hour tennis camp will be held for two hours per day for two weeks, from Monday, 6 July.
