Policewoman fatally shoots herself at hospital

Police are investigating.

AN INQUEST docket has been opened at Toti SAPS following a shooting incident at Kingsway Hospital on Thursday morning, 13 August.

We can confirm an incident took place this morning at Kingsway Hospital where a 34-year-old constable shot and killed herself. The motive is unknown. An inquest docket was opened at Amanzimtoti SAPS for investigation,” said provincial police spokesman, Maj Thulani Zwane.

In a media statement, Annatjie Demetriou, general manager of Netcare Kingsway Hospital confirmed that a woman, who was a visitor, died at the hospital following a self-inflicted injury. The incident occurred at about 5am and most patients and visitors to the hospital were not exposed to the tragedy.

Counsellors were immediately made available to offer support to the woman’s family, and counselling is also being offered to patients and staff members.
The hospital is co-operating with the police in their investigation.

“On behalf of the staff and management of the hospital, we wish to convey our sincere condolences to the woman’s family and her loved ones. We are not in a position to disclose any further information,” said Demetriou.
