Schools lauded for beautifying their spaces

Sesifikile Primary School was runner-up.

Mthombeni Primary School in Bhekuwandle won first place in this year’s school beautification competition, as announced at a prizegiving on Friday, 6 November.

The competition, hosted by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA), eThekweni Municipality’s environmental health services and Durban Solid Waste, has been running for the past 23 years.

Each year a team makes three unannounced visits to participating schools to grade them on their entrance, lawn, garden, recycling efforts, toilets, kitchen and classrooms.

Kwagumbi Primary School claimed third place, while Sesifikile Primary School was runner-up.

Most improved school was Sophie Phewa Primary School, best co-ordinator went to Bongani Mthembu of Dabulizizwe Primary School and best supporting principal was Bheki Mhlongo of Novunywa Primary School.

All winning schools won fantastic prizes sponsored by Makro and Umbogintwini Industrial Complex.
