Referendum needed on noisy fireworks

Where are our environmental bodies when it comes to fireworks?

EDITOR – I am so ashamed to be human after the awful noisy fireworks let off non-stop at Diwali.

What celebration allows pain and suffering to be bestowed on the creatures that we share our world with?

Dogs, cats, birds and so on – these petrified animals have no rights at all. And babies, toddlers, the sick and elderly? This is selfish and cruel.

There needs to be a total ban on fireworks.

It is high time a referendum was held about fireworks, including those let off over Guy Fawkes and New Year’s Eve. This process needs to begin at grass roots level, meaning with the councillors for each district taking a stand. The behaviour is in direct contravention of accepted environmental noise levels as laid down in the SA National Standard (SANS) for environmental noise.

Where are our environmental bodies when it comes to fireworks? Living creatures are affected by this onslaught, including humans. There needs to be a total ban on fireworks. Noiseless, elaborate and beautiful fireworks are available. Come on Ethekwini – show some leadership.
