Toti fashion designer leads the pack with best dressed win

''I was over the moon," she said. "It's a great award to win''

TOTI designer Madelaine Clarke won the ‘Ladies classic raceware best dressed’ title at this year’s Vodacom Durban July.

“I was over the moon,” she said. “It’s a great award to win. You can never tell your chances as the standard is very high and you never really know what the judges are looking for. But I was very happy with my creation as I accomplished the look I had in mind.

The theme was ‘Leader of the pack’ so I drew my inspiration from spades. I also wanted a sophisticated, stylish look which I believe should be synonymous with the races.

My model was Kirstin Holpert. She was an absolute star who braved the cold in style.”

Madelaine was born in Durban and did her schooling in the Free State. She always wanted to design and studied at the Witwatersrand Technikon. She has lived in Toti for 20 years.

For the Durban July judging, 10 finalists were chosen out of hundreds of outfits by fashion scouts and final judging took place on the main stage on race day, Saturday, 2 July where a professional panel of judges made the final decision.

This was Madelaine’s ninth Durban July win. “My first one was about eight years ago. I just went to the July as a guest, wearing one of my own creations and won best dressed on the day,” said the stylish designer.
